ESSAY

1. Hints: notes, keywords or photo

Essay: "Oh, btw when I send you a note, make sure to read it very well" or "If I send you a note, I hope you get what I am aiming at."

The person signs the notes with a screen name. Reject these essays.

Essay: "I enjoy just hanging with my friends and goofin off. From yukon oklahoma. If you want to talk to me pay attention to my keywords."

There's a Screen Name in the keywords and no, you don't need to see it. Always reject at any hint of contact info.

Essay: "uUhH hope you like my pic..check it out..zoom* as sum would say..into it! hehe"

Pay close attention to the photo and reject, even if you find nothing wrong with the photo. Any hint at contact info is a reject. This will prevent other people from copying and trying the same trick.

2. Spelling backwards

Essay: "This Is me, I Love hard work and love to see my hard work finished and looking good. Love to cycle ride, fish, hunt, and make you laugh. as we say in Italy "mocto dooha ytaykcul erocs rednu tog" If you understand that you are a smarty!"

It spells got underscore lucky at yahoo dot com (got_lucky@yahoo.com)

3. Metaphors: running man, cowboy yell, the hot place, etc

Essay: "Guy in Birmingham AL looking for friends to hang out with ok ladies, put your town or city in your intro please nuauayb needs a cowboy yell"

A cowboy yell is a clear reference to yahoo email (nuauaybe@yahoo.com). Other common references are:
    Running Man = AOL
    Yellow Guy = Yahoo Email
Hot or Warm Place = Hot Mail
    FTJ = Facethejury
    LJ = Livejournal

4. Putting together a Screen Name

Essay: "...mature Highschoolteach and Uni! Wanna meet me? On the net! add 199"

Screen name: Highschoolteach199. Always be suspicious of words with no space in between and numbers found somewhere else in the essay that look out of place.

Essay: "people know me as spoiledbrat and my favorite number is 34"

Screen name: spoiledbrat34. This one is harder to spot than the one above.

Essay: "I am a college student OU, looking for a bright and beautiful gal. Hopefully, she'll find me. so i'll /j/ust /o/ffer a/n/ idea so you can /K/now me better, and i was born in /84/ hope you can say hi"

Screen name: jonK84. Read between the slanted lines.

Essay: "If you wanna know more, take the first words. Sneaky is what I am. Devil is my name. At what point is it serious? Mail that is hot is what service I use the most."

Screen name: SneakyDevil at hotmail.

5. Capital letters spelling a Screen Name

Essay: "One Ridiculously Androgynous Knight Errant Reveals His Obscure Thoughts Mayhap Attracting Ineffable Ladies."

At first sight it looks like a harmless ramble on words, but if you look closer, you'll see how the capitalized letters spell an email address: ORAKER@HOTMAIL

Essay: "the Adventure starts here! IM: Smart, pacieNt, hEAlthy, KinkY, aDvEnturous, VIvacious, and atletic. See ya Later!"

Same as above. The capital letters spell "AIM: sneakydevil".

6. Also known as

Essay: "I'm chris, also know as Sneakydevil. I work a lot, and im a full time student at CCM(NNJ), going into law/business"

Used to post screen names, they're not that easy to spot when they don't have any numbers, so slow down and read carefully each essay. If it looks like contact info, reject and move on.

7. Directing them to a website

Essay: "LeAnna* - face the jury - sneaky devil no spaces I barely get on here. I'll write back eventually."

There are two reasons to reject. 1) Facethejury is a website. 2) Sneakydevil is a FTJ username, and that's contact info. Watch out for these!

Essay: "Hello! If you want to know about me, talk to me. I live in Birmingham, Alabama. I'm on myspace all the time (like a disease...) By the way, my name is Carolo."

Same as above. The person is directing people to MySpace, a website. Carolo is not a name, but a MySpace username. The more you mod, the easier it'll become to spot contact info. Slow down and keep your eyes wide open.

8. Random numbers

Essay: "name is josh and3 im 18 years1 old. i love4 music5, punk, emo6, hardcore7."

Common method to spell ICQ or Phone numbers.

9. If you're smart, you'll find a way to get in touch with me

Essay: "I'm a sneakydevil... if you aren't stupid... you can figure out how to get a hold of me... so think real hard if you want to... and add me"

Screen name: In this case the person is drawing attention to the screen name.

Essay: "Take a look at my note... you can figure out how to get a hold of me... so think real hard if you want to... and add me"

Same as above, but the contact info is hidden in the note. Reject.

10. Contact info: workplace, places where they hang out

Essay: "Name's Arthur B and I live in Orlando, FL. I'm into cars and I currently run my own business, AutoCenter Glass Repair."

A place of employment if specific enough is a reject. In this case he gave the name of his city and business which someone could easily find in the yellow pages.

11. Bilingual essays

Essay: "Hello! my name's Francisco, I'm 22 and I live in argentina. Bye bye! calvitooooxo en el cartero caluroso. Besos!"

The last sentence translates as "Calvitooooxo with the hot mailman", a hotmail address reference. Cheaters are creative, so be cautious when you come across those, and if possible use a translator site.

1. Animations with hidden contact info

Wait a few seconds for the contact info to pop up.

2. Bottom of the photo

Slow down and take your time to study the entire photo, paying extra attention to the bottom.

3. Blends with the background color

LEFT: The font color is almost the same color as the sky, making the email address difficult to spot.
RIGHT: Email address at the bottom of the picture, the color blends easily with the sweatshirt.

4. Outside the photo

Easy to miss when people see the end of the photo and push the "Reject / Accept" option. Don't move to the next photo until you have seen the bottom of the pink/blue frame. That's where the photo ends.

5. Clothing/furniture

How obvious it is depends on the person's photo editing skills. Read carefully any text in the photo... good photoshop jobs are not easy to spot at first sight.

6. Webcam screenshot
